Our story isn't your typical startup tale; it's personal, practical, and started during an unprecedented global event.

In the early days of the Covid pandemic, Joe found himself unexpectedly furloughed from his role as an ecommerce manager at Northern Ireland's largest ecommerce company. After all, parcels don't ship themselves if couriers aren’t available to collect them! Meanwhile, Emily, who runs Morbidology, an award-winning true crime podcast and website, was eager to support her local community during such uncertain times.

Joe’s passion for urban exploration through his site, Urbex Hub, regularly required detailed planning to reach fascinating but remote locations, making efficient routing critical. Similarly, Emily’s investigative journalism involved extensive travel and careful itinerary planning to effectively cover locations central to her stories.

Seeing an opportunity to contribute positively during lockdown, Joe and Emily utilised spare capacity in Joe's warehouse and fulfilment operations. They collaborated with a local business producing essential 3D-printed face shields. However, their excitement was soon met with logistical frustration: on their very first delivery day, they accidentally visited the same business three times within five hours due to poorly organised routes on their PDAs. This was their first direct encounter with the notorious "travelling salesman problem," the challenge of efficiently navigating multiple stops without needless repetition. Despite Joe’s extensive experience shipping to nearly every country worldwide, local logistics proved surprisingly challenging!

Fast forward a couple of years, Joe’s ongoing urban exploration trips and Emily’s investigative travels repeatedly underscored this persistent routing headache. Determined to solve this issue once and for all, they created Sort My Route, a tool specifically designed for hobbyists, travellers, urban explorers, day-trippers, and busy parents. In short, anyone keen on saving fuel, reclaiming valuable time, and making their journeys a bit greener.
